In August 2023, RWM reached an incredible milestone, placing its 8,000th worker under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme in just four years.
One of the workers who helped us achieve this mark is Christiano Martins Gusmao. A production worker with Australian Country Choice in Brisbane, Christiano is part of a growing number of workers from Timor-Leste who have come to Australia for new opportunities.
While Fiji, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, and Kiribati have been the main sources of PALM workers, Timor-Leste has seen a steady increase in its citizens joining the scheme over the past year. Christiano’s story is a perfect example of the dedication and hard work these individuals bring with them, and it’s a privilege to share a glimpse into his journey.
For Christiano, moving to Australia marked a big change. “Australia is very different from what I know back home in Timor-Leste,” he shared. His first day in Australia was memorable, with a warm welcome at the airport and even his first Aussie barbecue. “It felt great to arrive knowing my journey working in Australia was just about to begin,” he said.
It’s this kind of positive outlook and determination that PALM workers like Christiano bring to their roles here in Australia.
For Christiano, the opportunity to work in Australia means much more than just a job. “I’m very happy to get the work in Australia,” he shared. “I’m able to support my children and nephew to finish their studies.” This dedication to family is a common thread among PALM workers, many of whom come to Australia with the goal of securing a brighter future for their loved ones back home.
Christiano’s journey is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that PALM workers have on their families, communities, and the countries they come from.
RWM's placement of Christiano as its 8,000th PALM worker highlights the collective achievements and dedication of PALM employees while spotlighting the company's commitment to facilitating a positive experience for PALM workers, empowering them to support their families and achieve their goals.
