From Electrician to Site Manager: How RWM’s Support and Opportunities Fuel Career Growth
Jacob McGregor's career progression highlights how Regional Workforce Management (RWM) nurtures their staff and provides avenues for professional growth. Starting his career as an electrician, Jacob's journey took a turn due to an injury at work in 2018.
Fast forward to 2020, Jacob began working in the meat processing sector for RWM in Brisbane’s East as a labourer on the processing line. “After my injury as an electrician in 2018, I was looking for unskilled work and found a position as a labourer at my new employer,” said Jacob. Little did he know that this would be the beginning of an interesting and rewarding career that would lead to much more than labouring.
From wires to leadership
After six months in the role, Jacob transitioned to the role of a COVID-19 monitor at the start of the pandemic. This involved keeping staff safe and ensuring compliance with COVID-19 Safe plans. A few months later, another opportunity arose. “A previous RWM Site Manager asked if I was interested in an office role, and I took the opportunity,” said Jacob. His dedication led him to an administrative position in the meat processor's office, where he eventually became an onsite admin.
Jacob's journey continued as he progressed to Assistant Site Manager, and later took on the role of Site Manager on the Gold Coast before returning to our clients sites in Brisbane as the Site Manager for RWM. Despite unexpected career shifts, Jacob's commitment and adaptability have been key to his progression at RWM. “One of the main reasons I've stayed with RWM is because of the support of my managers above me and the relationship we have with the client, which is well maintained as we work with them every day on site,” said Jacob.
Embracing diversity
Jacob also finds learning about other cultures through the PALM workers a rewarding aspect of his job. “I enjoy sitting down with the employees and hearing about what they wish to achieve while in Australia. It's reminded me that we're very fortunate in Australia,” Jacob said.
Beyond supporting PALM workers to achieve their goals, he describes the unique role of a Site Manager to support the wellbeing and welfare of workers. “One week I might be putting furniture together in their houses, next week I may be supporting workers in counselling and welfare and the week after that I’m helping them with banking and getting their shopping done,” said Jacob.
One of the unique aspects of Jacob's role is the exposure his young family receives to different cultures. He shared, "My kids join cultural day events, it's been great for them to learn about different cultures and lifestyles, helping them appreciate and understand diversity.”
Jacob's career progression from an electrician to an integral part of RWM's team highlights the opportunities available to those willing to take on a unique role. Pattson Tutu worked for RWM within the meat processing industry in Victoria part of the PALM Scheme for three years before returning home to the Solomon Islands in 2023. During this time Pattson worked on the production line as a labourer and was actively engaged with the community. His Site Manager said “Pattson was a dedicated and focused worker in the meat processing industry, he was also involved with the local community and attended church weekly,”

Reconnecting in their home country
One year later, his Site Manager, travelled to Savo Island, a small village in the Solomon Islands to meet Pattson, which was a heartwarming and eye-opening trip. "It was really emotional being able to see Pattson again. I spent a lot of time with him and other Solomon Island workers during their time here in Australia, celebrating the good and bad. They've become like family to me," said his Site Manager.
Witnessing Pattson's journey from arriving to Australia in 2019, to achieving many milestones and goals moved his site manager. "His goals were to support his family financially and improve their standard of living while he worked in Australia. He's so humble about what he has achieved," they added, highlighting Pattson's admirable humility amongst his grand achievements.
Impact and success beyond borders
During their trip, his site manager witnessed the impact of Pattson's accomplishments for his family and wider community. “With money saved working in Australia, he's built three houses, for himself and his siblings, one of which they call the 'canteen' which sells groceries and essentials to village locals," they shared. “Now that Pattson and his wife are expecting their first child, the properties he has built has taken away a lot of stress for this family and has laid solid financial foundations," said his site manager.
Since returning to his village, Pattson was appointed as a youth coordinator at his church and has also invested in boats for transportation, enhancing accessibility between islands and contributing to the economic growth of his community. "His whole island has benefited with better access to groceries and transport, while he is inspiring and educating the next generation in his village," his site manager said said, highlighting the broader impact of opportunities through the PALM Scheme.
